Chemical Storage and GHS Labelling: What an East African Site Needs
Segregation, containment, labelling and the safety file. What a chemical store in Kenya has to get right to pass inspection and, more importantly, to stop an incident becoming an injury.
A chemical store fails in one of two ways. Either two things that should never have been near each other end up on the same shelf, or nobody could tell what was in the drum. Both are preventable with decisions made before the first delivery arrives.
Segregation: what must not share a space
Incompatible storage is the failure with the worst consequences, because it does not announce itself until it happens. The groupings that matter most:
- Acids and bases — separate. A mixed spill generates heat, and in a
confined bund that heat has nowhere to go.
- Oxidisers and anything combustible — separate, and this includes
packaging, pallets and rags, not just fuels and solvents. An oxidiser turns a small fire into one that does not need external air.
- Cyanides, sulphides and acids — never together. Contact liberates
hydrogen cyanide or hydrogen sulphide, both lethal at low concentration.
- Water-reactive materials — away from wet areas, from the sprinkler
coverage, and from anything that could flood.
- Flammable solvents — their own ventilated, ignition-controlled area.
Separation means a physical barrier or genuine distance, not two ends of the same shelf. Where space is tight, segregated cabinets are cheaper than the alternative.
Check compatibility against section 10 of the SDS for each product, not against general category. Two acids are not automatically compatible with each other.
Containment
Assume every container will eventually leak. The convention most bunding is designed to is whichever is greater: 110% of the largest single container, or 25% of the total volume stored. Confirm the figure your own NEMA licence and insurer require, because those govern your site.
Beyond the bund:
- Drainage that cannot carry a spill to a storm drain or watercourse
- Spill kits inside the store, sized to the largest container, with
absorbent appropriate to what is held
- Floors that resist what is stored on them — a concrete floor is not
acid-resistant without a coating
- Separate collection for incompatible spill waste
Discharging chemical waste to the environment is a NEMA offence, and a spill that reaches a drain becomes an environmental incident with a reporting obligation on top of the cleanup.
GHS labelling
Kenya applies the Globally Harmonised System. Every container in the store — including anything decanted into a smaller vessel — carries:
- Product identifier matching the SDS exactly
- Signal word: Danger or Warning, never both
- Hazard pictograms, red diamond border on white
- Hazard statements (H-codes) in full text
- Precautionary statements (P-codes)
- Supplier identification
The decanting rule is the one most often missed. A solvent transferred into an unlabelled bottle for a day's work is legally and practically unlabelled, and it is the container most likely to be misidentified — usually by someone who was not there when it was filled.
Labels must stay legible. In a store that means resistant to the material itself, and to sunlight if any part of the store is exposed.
The safety file
An inspector will ask for it, but its real purpose is that somebody can find the right information during an incident, when nobody has time to search.
Keep, current and accessible:
- SDS for every product held, in date. An SDS is revised; an old one on
file is not compliance.
- A chemical register: what is held, maximum quantity, where, and its
hazard class
- Training records showing who is authorised to handle what
- PPE issue records and inspection dates for eyewash and safety showers
- Incident and near-miss records, including what changed afterwards
Accessible means reachable without unlocking the store you may not be able to enter. A copy outside the store, and one with the site's emergency contacts, is the arrangement that survives a real incident.
Practical checks worth doing this month
- Walk the store and read every label. Anything you cannot identify goes to
disposal, not back on the shelf.
- Check that eyewash and shower units actually run, and that the path to them
is clear.
- Confirm the spill kit contents have not been raided for other jobs.
- Verify that the SDS folder matches what is physically present — both
directions. Products with no SDS, and SDS for products long gone.
- Check bund integrity for cracks and standing rainwater.
What to ask your supplier for
The documentation obligation starts at delivery. From any supplier, expect:
- An SDS issued with the consignment, in date, for the specific product
and grade
- A certificate of analysis tied to the delivered batch
- GHS-compliant labelling already on the container
- UN number and packing group where the material is classified for
transport
If a supplier treats these as an optional extra, that tells you something about the rest of what they do.
